Daniel Gomis (2011) Signed LOI
Signed LOI – 11/10/10
Daniel Gomis – 6’10″, 230, F, Theis, Senegal (Community School, Sun Valley/Oak Hill Academy)
Daniel is another Senegal native from the SEEDS academy. But he has taken a different route than the others thus far. He’s spending a year as an exchange student in Sun Valley, Idaho, before going to Oak Hill Academy next year. By working school this way, he’s allowed to get his Clearinghouse qualification, and he can concentrate on hoops at a higher profile prep location.
He’s very long… even at 6’10″. He plays excellent man and help side defense. He has a great handle for his size, a soft jumper with an extremely high release (to 20′), and great feet, which allow him to finish well around and on the rim. He fills all the right lanes in transition, and he has a knack for being in the right place at the right time for a board. Oh… and he plays way above the rim. Mr. Gomis has some serious hops to add to his 6’10″ frame.
He also plays with a lot of grit. From different quotes I’ve read, I get the feeling Daniel loves to play defense.
That’s probably because defense rules.
Daniel was able to play for Community School despite a recent rule change which gave exchange students the same status as transfer students. Since Community School has no JV team, the Northside Conference generously allowed him to play regular season games for the Cutthroats. But the rule, requiring one year of ineligiblity before participating in varsity sports, forced Gomis to sit out of any postseason play.
The speculation was that Daniel was trying to fly under the radar during this past season by spending it in Sun Valley. But how do you do that after participating in the Jordan Brand Classic and the Nike Global Challenge? He has recently enrolled at Oak Hill Academy to play under legendary coach Steve Smith and attend a strict regimen of classes his senior year. He should flourish in that environment. Good luck to him this coming season.

Sounds like a classic case of a kid committing too early, leaving too much time for the vultures to descend and steal him. He won’t be a secret when he enrolls at Oak Hill. If he ends up at Kentucky, there is a good chance that I will get acutely ill.
Ha! I doubt it. He’s not really a secret now.
I wouldn’t worry too much about Gomis. I’m told he’s a cerebral type who takes commitments seriously.
